What is throttle?

throttle linkage

Glossary “throttle linkage” Definition:
Connection between the accelerator pedal and the throttle. Also refers to the connection from the throttle to the A/T, using either a rod or cable.

throttle pressure

Glossary “throttle pressure” Definition:
Transmission hydraulic pressure that is directly related to engine load. Throttle pressure, which increases with throttle opening and engine torque output, is one of the principle pressures used to control shift points.

throttle hard stop

Glossary “throttle hard stop” Definition:
Throttle stop on which the throttle lever rests when the throttle is released. On most computer controlled vehicles, this adjustment point is sealed, and is not used to adjust idle speed.

throttle body

Glossary “throttle body” Definition:
Housing of the intake system that may or may not contain a fuel injection system. Housing that contains the fuel injector(s) used in a TBI system.

throttle body fuel injection (TBI)

Glossary “throttle body fuel injection (TBI)” Definition:
A fuel injection system in which one or two injectors are installed in a carburot like throttle body mounted on a conventional manifold. Fuel is sprayed at a constant pressure above the throttle plate(s) to mix with the incoming air.

throttle body injection system (TBI)

Glossary “throttle body injection system (TBI)” Definition:
A fuel-injection system that resembles a carburetor and has fuel injector(s) located in a common throttle body. It provides many of the advantages of fuel injection, such as easier starting and lower emissions, without the cost and complexity of a multiport-injection system.
