Glossary “intake ports” Definition:
1). Passages in the cylinder head that direct A/F mixture from the intake manifold to the intake valves. 2). Passages in an L-head engine block that direct the A/F mixture from the intake manifold to the intake valves. 3). Passages in the head or block of an injected engine that direct air to the intake valves from the intake manifold.

Glossary “intake stroke” Definition:
Downward stroke of a piston that draws the A/F mixture into the cylinder. The first stroke in the four-stroke cycle. Diesel engines only draw in air during this stroke.

Glossary “intake valve” Definition:
Valve that opens to admit the A/F mixture.

Glossary “intake over exhaust (IOE)” Definition:
Engine design having intake valves in the cylinder head and exhaust valves in the block

Glossary “intake air temperature sensor” Definition:
IAT A thermistor device that senses intake air temperature by changing it’s resistance as a negative temperature coefficient resister.

Glossary “intake manifold” Definition:
Component used to duct: 1). The A/F mixture from the carburetor to the intake ports. 2). Air in an injected engine to the intake ports.

Glossary “intake manifold vacuum” Definition:
The pressure inside the intake manifold when the engine is operating.

Glossary “intake air” Definition:
Air drawn through a filter and distributed to each cylinder for use in combustion.
