What is hot

hot wire

Glossary “hot wire” Definition:
1). Wire that carries current from the ungrounded terminal of the battery to an electric load. 2). To bypass the ignition switch to start the vehicle.

hot working

Glossary “hot working” Definition:
The mechanical working of metal at a temperature above it recrystallization point and high enough to prevent strain hardening.

hot tank

Glossary “hot tank” Definition:
A large vat containing a hot, caustic chemical solution that is used to clean the engine block and parts.

hot soak

Glossary “hot soak” Definition:
1). Condition that may occur when an engine is stopped for a period of time after a hot hard run, causing the gasoline to evaporate out of the carburetor. 2). A period of time where localized combustion heat dissapates through the engine. 3). Allowing a vehicle to sit at a high temperature until all internal and external components stabilize. 4). Federal test procedure for new vehicle certification of overall emission output. This test is normally done in a sealed chamber and all emissions coming from the vehicle are measured. These include exhaust, evaporative. tires, paint, and interior component emissions, in other words, all emissions given off from a vehicle.

hot spot

Glossary “hot spot” Definition:
1). A localized area where excessive heat can build up, such as around a spark plug, that could cause preignition. 2). An area on an vehicle’s body where corrosion is most likely to occur.

hot idle compensator

Glossary “hot idle compensator” Definition:
Temperature-sensitive carburetor valve that opens when the inlet air temperature exceeds a certain level to allow additional air to enter the intake manifold, preventing an overly rich air/fuel ratio.

hot gas

Glossary “hot gas” Definition:
Condition of refrigerant as it leaves the compressor until it gives up its heat and condenses.
