Glossary “clutch switch” Definition:
Switch found only on manual transmission equipped vehicles that disables the speed control system when the clutch pedal is depressed. May also be referred to as a Speed Control Release Switch.

Glossary “clutch teeth” Definition:
The locking teeth of a gear, onto which the shift collar engages to transfer power to the output shaft.

Glossary “clutch slippage” Definition:
Engine speed increases but increased torque is not transferred through to the driving wheels because of clutch slippage.

Glossary “clutch pushrod” Definition:
A rod that transfers linear motion between movable parts, that is, the clutch release bearing and the release plate.

Glossary “clutch release bearing” Definition:
A bearing moved by the clutch pedal linkage into the release arms to disengage the clutch. It is also called a throw-out bearing.

Glossary “clutch safety switch” Definition:
See neutral start switch.

Glossary “clutch shaft” Definition:
Sometimes referred to as the transmission input shaft. The clutch disc is splined to and drives this shaft as the input to the transmission.

Glossary “clutch friction material” Definition:
Friction materail that is rivited to the clutch disc, to transfer power for the flywheel to the transmission when the clutch is engaged.

Glossary “clutch housing” Definition:
Large aluminum or iron casting that surrounds the clutch assembly. Located between the engine and the transmission, it is also referred to as the bell housing.

Glossary “clutch hub” Definition:
The inner part of the clutch disc.

Glossary “clutch linkage” Definition:
A combination of shafts, levers and cables that transmits clutch pedal motion to the clutch assembly.

Glossary “clutch packs” Definition:
A series of clutch discs and plates installed alternately in a housing to act as a driving or driven member.

Glossary “clutch pedal” Definition:
Pedal in the driver’s compartment that operates the clutch.

Glossary “clutch drum” Definition:
Metal drum in which clutches are contained.

Glossary “clutch facing” Definition:
Friction material used in a clutch disc.

Glossary “clutch fork” Definition:
Also called throwout or release lever, it fits between the release bearing and the clutch cable or linkage.

Glossary “clutch free play” Definition:
Also called free travel, it is the movement that is measured at the clutch pedal.

Glossary “clutch disc” Definition:
The friction material part of the clutch assembly that fits between the flywheel and the pressure plate (also may be referred to as clutch cover.

Glossary “clutch control cable” Definition:
Cable assembly with a flexible outer housing anchored at the upper and lower ends. Moving back and forth inside the flexible housing is a braided wire cable that transfers clutch pedal movement to the clutch release lever.
