volumetric efficiency (VE)
Glossary “volumetric efficiency (VE)” Definition:
1). A percentage ratio that varies with the engine’s rpm, measuring the difference between the air-fuel mixture actually entering a cylinder and the amount that can enter under ideal conditions. 2). The ratio between the amount of air-fuel mixture that actually enters the cylinder and the amount that could enter under ideal conditions expressed as a percentage.
Volvo
Glossary “Volvo” Definition:
Very Odd Looking Vehicular Object
VOM
Glossary “VOM” Definition:
Volt Ohm Meter
VOR
Glossary “VOR” Definition:
Vehicle Off Road.
volume
Glossary “volume” Definition:
Measurement of space expressed as cubic inches, cubic centimeters, liters, etc.
volume air flow
Glossary “volume air flow” Definition:
Amount of air entering the engine intake, measured in cubic feet per minute (CFM).
VOLTDSD
Glossary “VOLTDSD” Definition:
Desired Voltage
voltmeter
Glossary “voltmeter” Definition:
Instrument used to read the pressure behind the flow of electrons.
volts
Glossary “volts” Definition:
The measurement of electrical pressure.
voltage scale
Glossary “voltage scale” Definition:
Voltage defined by each vertical division on a scope display.
voltage spike
Glossary “voltage spike” Definition:
Momentary increase or decrease in voltage. A high voltage that ocurrs while disconnecting a powered circuit lead that happens because electrons that were in motion before the circuit was opened. When they try to push their way across the gap that was created wwhen the circuit was opened, the spike is created.
voltage generating sensor
Glossary “voltage generating sensor” Definition:
Device having a junction of dissimilar metals that provide a small voltage output. A VRS is an example of a voltage generating sensor, as well as a 02 sensor.
voltage potential
Glossary “voltage potential” Definition:
Electrical pressure at a particular point.
voltage regulator
Glossary “voltage regulator” Definition:
Electrical or electronic device to control the output of a generator or alternator.
voltage drop testing
Glossary “voltage drop testing” Definition:
Test using a voltmeter to check for resistance in a loaded circuit.
voltage limiter
Glossary “voltage limiter” Definition:
Connected through the resistor network of a voltage regulator, it controls the field voltage for the required amount of charging system output.
voltage coupling
Glossary “voltage coupling” Definition:
Setting that enables an ocilloscope to read a type of voltage. AC coupling allows the scope to filter out the DC and read only AC voltage, DC coupling allows the scope to read AC and DC voltages. Ground coupling displays the ground trace.
voltage dividers
Glossary “voltage dividers” Definition:
Variable resisrors that produce a variable DC voltage signal.
voltage drop
Glossary “voltage drop” Definition:
The amount of voltage required or dropped, to pushing the amperage across any resistance value.
