Glossary “outside micrometer” Definition:
Used to take external measurements of components, such as the diameter of a piston. Major components and markings of the micrometer include the frame, anvil, spindle, lock nut, sleeve numbers, thimble marks, sleeve long line, and the ratchet screw. Each turn of the thimble moves the spindle 0.025 of an inch, metric micrometers values are different. Some also include a vernier scale which is used to indicate 0.0001 inch.
