I-head engine
Glossary “I-head engine” Definition:
An overhead valve engine with the valves in the head..
ignition timing-retard sensor
Glossary “ignition timing-retard sensor” Definition:
A term used for knock sensor.
IGN 1-10_F
Glossary “IGN 1-10_F” Definition:

IGNPCM-F
Glossary “IGNPCM-F” Definition:
Spark Conduction Capture Circuit Fault Detected
ignition switch
Glossary “ignition switch” Definition:
A five-position switch that is the power distribution point for most of the vehicle’s primary electrical systems. The spring loaded START position provides momentary contact and automatically moves to the RUN position when the key is released. The other switch detent positions are ACCESSORIES, LOCK, and OFF.
ignition system
Glossary “ignition system” Definition:
The major components, such as the battery, coil, ignition switch, distributor, high-tension wiring, and spark plugs, that provide the right spark at the right time to ignite the air/fuel mixture.
ignition temperature
Glossary “ignition temperature” Definition:
The lowest temperature at which a combustible material will ignite and continue to burn independent of the heat source.
ignition timing
Glossary “ignition timing” Definition:
The timing of the spark, expressed in crankshaft degrees, in relation to top dead center.
ignition resistor
Glossary “ignition resistor” Definition:
A resistance element in series with the primary circuit to reduce the voltage supplied to the coil during engine operation.
ignition retard
Glossary “ignition retard” Definition:
The moving back in time of the ignition spark relative to the position of the piston.
ignition pressure switch
Glossary “ignition pressure switch” Definition:
Pressure switches used on turbocharged engines in conjunction with dual mode ignition to retard spark timing periods of boost to prevent engine damage.
Ignition Reference Signal
Glossary “Ignition Reference Signal” Definition:
Signal used by the ECM to determine engine RPM and crankshaft position.
ignition reserve
Glossary “ignition reserve” Definition:
The difference between the minimum available and maximum required voltage for proper operation.
ignition coil
Glossary “ignition coil” Definition:
A transformer containing a primary and secondary winding that acts to boost the battery voltage of 12 volts to as much as 30,000 volts to fire the spark plugs.
ignition distributor
Glossary “ignition distributor” Definition:
Term used for distributor.
ignition interval
Glossary “ignition interval” Definition:
Number of degrees or crankshaft rotation ignition events. Also called firing interval.
ignition map
Glossary “ignition map” Definition:
A chart showing the precise advance and retard of the ignition on an electronic control-equipped engine.
ignition module signal
Glossary “ignition module signal” Definition:
Signal produced by the ECA that controls the ignition module ON and OFF time and, therefore, the spark timing and coil dwell.
ignition points
Glossary “ignition points” Definition:
A term used for points.
