Glossary “hot soak” Definition:
1). Condition that may occur when an engine is stopped for a period of time after a hot hard run, causing the gasoline to evaporate out of the carburetor. 2). A period of time where localized combustion heat dissapates through the engine. 3). Allowing a vehicle to sit at a high temperature until all internal and external components stabilize. 4). Federal test procedure for new vehicle certification of overall emission output. This test is normally done in a sealed chamber and all emissions coming from the vehicle are measured. These include exhaust, evaporative. tires, paint, and interior component emissions, in other words, all emissions given off from a vehicle.

hot spot
Glossary “hot spot” Definition:
1). A localized area where excessive heat can build up, such as around a spark plug, that could cause preignition. 2). An area on an vehicle’s body where corrosion is most likely to occur.
hot tank
Glossary “hot tank” Definition:
A large vat containing a hot, caustic chemical solution that is used to clean the engine block and parts.
hot tank gloves
Glossary “hot tank gloves” Definition:
Long -sleeved, thick rubber gloves for use in the hot tank.
hot weather solvent
Glossary “hot weather solvent” Definition:
A reducer or thinner. It is designed to slow solvent evaporation to prevent problems during periods of hot weather.
hot idle compensator
Glossary “hot idle compensator” Definition:
Temperature-sensitive carburetor valve that opens when the inlet air temperature exceeds a certain level to allow additional air to enter the intake manifold, preventing an overly rich air/fuel ratio.
hot patch
Glossary “hot patch” Definition:
Patch applied to a tube or tire with use of heat to vulcanize it onto the damaged surface.
hot rolled steel (HRS)
Glossary “hot rolled steel (HRS)” Definition:
Steel that is formed while hot.
hot air plastic welding
Glossary “hot air plastic welding” Definition:
Uses a tool with an electric heating element to produce hot air which blows through a nozzle and onto the plastic material.
hot drawn
Glossary “hot drawn” Definition:
Process of forming metal by heating it and pulling it through rollers or dies.
hot gas
Glossary “hot gas” Definition:
Condition of refrigerant as it leaves the compressor until it gives up its heat and condenses.
hot gas bypass line
Glossary “hot gas bypass line” Definition:
The line that connects the hot-gas bypass valve outlet to the evaporator outlet.
hot gas bypass valve
Glossary “hot gas bypass valve” Definition:
Device used to meter hot gas back to the evaporator, through the bypass line, to prevent condensate from freezing on the core.
hot gas defrosting
Glossary “hot gas defrosting” Definition:
The use of high-pressure gas in the evaporator to remove frost.
hose clamp
Glossary “hose clamp” Definition:
Device used to attach hoses to the engine, heater core, radiator, and water pump. A popular type of replacement clamp is the high-torque, worm-gear clamp with a carbon steel screw and a stainless-steel band.
horizontal datum plane
Glossary “horizontal datum plane” Definition:
A horizontal plane, located at or below a vehicle’s inderbody, that serves as a reference for height measurements.
horizontal welding
Glossary “horizontal welding” Definition:
The pieces are turned side-ways. Gravity tends to pull the puddle into the bottom piece.
horn
Glossary “horn” Definition:
Electrical noise making device.
horn brush/slip-ring
Glossary “horn brush/slip-ring” Definition:
Electrical contact ring used in the horn circuit, located in the steering wheel, and used to maintain electrical contact when the steering wheel is turned.
horn relay
Glossary “horn relay” Definition:
Relay used to carry the high horn current, requiring smaller amount of current to actuate.
