drive trace
Glossary “drive trace” Definition:
Grapic display of the driving conditions for an I/M 240 test. The vehicle is driven on a dynamometer to match speed, acceleration, and deceleration shown on the trace. The trace can also be used to pinpoint when and where a vehicle failed the I/M test.
driveability
Glossary “driveability” Definition:
The general operation of a vehicle, rated from good to poor, based on the characteristics of the average driver.
driveline torque
Glossary “driveline torque” Definition:
Relates to rear wheeel driveline and is the transfer of torque between the transmission and the driving axle assembly.
drive pinion flange
Glossary “drive pinion flange” Definition:
A flange used to connect the rear of the drive shaft to the rear axle drive pinion.
drive pinion gear
Glossary “drive pinion gear” Definition:
One of the two driving gears located within the transaxle or rear axle housing. Together the two gears multiply engine torque.
drive plate
Glossary “drive plate” Definition:
See flex plate.
drive range
Glossary “drive range” Definition:
Selector lever range which allows the transmission to eventally go into a higher gear range. Or, the state or stage of being in high range in non-overdrive units.
drive shaft
Glossary “drive shaft” Definition:
An assembly of one or two universal joints connected to a shaft or tube used to transmit power from the transmission to the differential.
drive shaft installation angle
Glossary “drive shaft installation angle” Definition:
The angle the drive shaft is mounted off the true horizontial line, measured in degrees.
drive line clunk
Glossary “drive line clunk” Definition:
Loud noise that can be attributed to total powertrain response to torque reversals in the system, including, but not limited to, backlash in the transmission, driveshaft and axle.
drive line torque
Glossary “drive line torque” Definition:
Transfer of torque between the transmission and the driving axle assembly.
drive line vibration
Glossary “drive line vibration” Definition:
Vibration felt in the floor pan and/or seats with no visible shaking. It is often accompanied by a rumble or similar noise. Usually felt at speeds over 30 mph.
drive pinion
Glossary “drive pinion” Definition:
The gear that takes its power directly from the drive shaft or transmission and drives the ring gear.
drive line
Glossary “drive line” Definition:
Assembly of various parts such as the driveshaft, universal joints, and connecting yokes that transmit torque from the transmission to the differential.
drive by wire
Glossary “drive by wire” Definition:
To use an electronic throttle control rather than mechanical linkage.
drive coil
Glossary “drive coil” Definition:
Hollow field coil in a positive engaged starter that is used to attract the moveable pole shoe.
Drive Cycle
Glossary “Drive Cycle” Definition:
The purpose of the OBDII drive cycle is to assure that all of the on-board diagnostic tests (monitors) have been run on the vehicle so that all of the I/M flags are set to READY or COMPLETE.
drive fit
Glossary “drive fit” Definition:
Term used for interface fit.
drive gear
Glossary “drive gear” Definition:
Combination of two operating gears, the first is the drive gear (input) and the other is the driven gear (output).
