diesel cycle

Glossary “diesel cycle” Definition:
An engine operating cycle where the air is compressed and the fuel is injected at the end of the compression stroke, causing ignition.

diesel dynamic timing meter

Glossary “diesel dynamic timing meter” Definition:
To dynamically time a diesel engine, the fuel line pulse, crankshaft position and combustion time must be referenced at the same time. The fuel line pulse is monitored with a pressure transducer. Crankshaft position is monitored with a magnetic probe. Combustion is monitored by inserting a luminosity probe into a specific glow plug hole. The luminosity probe is then attached to a photocell which detects combustion.

diesel fuel

Glossary “diesel fuel” Definition:
Fuel designed to be used in a CI engine. It is blended for different temperature ranges, such as summer or winter blends. It is rated by cetane which indicates the ease at which it ignites, the higher the cetane rating, the easier the fuel ignites.

diesel injection nozzle tester

Glossary “diesel injection nozzle tester” Definition:
Consists of a reservoir filled with special calibration fluid, high pressure pump, and the adapters neeeded to attach a pressurized line to a nozzle. Used to bench test injector nozzles.

dielectric grease

Glossary “dielectric grease” Definition:
Lithium or silicone based grease used to lubricate, protect from moisture, and dissipate heat while acting as a non-conductor; applications include light bulb sockets, spark plug boots, distributor caps and under ignition modules

diaphragm

Glossary “diaphragm” Definition:
1). A flexible membrane in a speaker or microphone where electrical signals are converted to sound vibrations and vice versa. 2). The flexible membrane found in a temperature or pressure control device that seals in an inert fluid or gas from the atmosphere while allowing a mechanical movement due to changes in pressure or temperature.
