distributor points

Glossary “distributor points” Definition:
Contact points that are opened and closed through the action of the distributor cam against a rubbing block attached to the points. As the cam lobes rotate, their action upon the rubbing block, cause the points to onpen and closed at specific degrees of rotation. When the points are closed, current flows in the coil primary circuit. When the points are opened, the primary circuit current is turned off and the magnetic field that was developed in the primary windings, collapses across the secondary winding and induces a higher voltage in that circuit which is used to fire the spark plugs.

distributor cap

Glossary “distributor cap” Definition:
Conventional ignition-system distributor, having a central terminal that receives secondary voltage from the coil and four, six, or eight peripheral terminals to send this voltage to the spark plugs.
