Glossary “cold solder connection” Definition:
Defective electrical connection made when the solder is melted by the soldering iron, but the wire is too cold to bond it.
c
cold start injector
Glossary “cold start injector” Definition:
An additional injector used to assist in cold weather engine starting.
cold weather modulator
Glossary “cold weather modulator” Definition:
Vacuum modulator located in the air cleaner which prevents the hot air duct door from opening to non-heated intake air when the incoming air is below 55¡ãF. Different color coded modulator indicate different opening temperatures.
cold weather solvent
Glossary “cold weather solvent” Definition:
Designed to speed solvent evaportation, so the paint flows and dries in a reasonable amount of time.
collapse
Glossary “collapse” Definition:
Occurs to the magnetic field when the current through the coil windings is turned off. The waves of magnetic force move quickly to the center of the conductor (core) of the coil.
cold cracking
Glossary “cold cracking” Definition:
Cracking of an excessively thick paint finish when subjected to cold and then to warm temperatures. As metal expands, the paint does not expand with it due to internal stresses in the paint and the paint cracks. Also, flexing an improperly painted flexible plastic part in cool or cold temperature will cause cracking.
coke
Glossary “coke” Definition:
A solid residue left after the distillation of petroleum or other liquid hydrocarbons. Most commonly found in the oil return line of a turbocharger, because the oil is subjected to high heat loads in the area. The residue will restrict the oil flow through the turbocharger, cause damage and failure of the component.
coking
Glossary “coking” Definition:
See coke.
col
Glossary “col” Definition:
Acronym form of Column
coil saturation
Glossary “coil saturation” Definition:
When the magnetic field has finished its buildup inside a coil, and no additional current will flow.
coil spring
Glossary “coil spring” Definition:
A spring steel rod wound into a coil.
coil spring clutch
Glossary “coil spring clutch” Definition:
Clutch using coil springs to hold the pressure plate against the friction plate.
coil wire
Glossary “coil wire” Definition:
Wire that carries secondary high voltage from the coil to the distributor cap in a distributor type ignition system.
coil on plug
Glossary “coil on plug” Definition:
Type of ignition that each cylinder (spark plug) has its own ignition coil.
coil pack
Glossary “coil pack” Definition:
Assembly of more than one coil in a single module.
coil preload spring
Glossary “coil preload spring” Definition:
Coil springs are made of tempered steel rods formed into a sprial that resists compression and are located in the pressure plate assembly.
COC
Glossary “COC” Definition:
Conventional Oxidation Catalyst. Acts on HC and CO.
coefficient of friction
Glossary “coefficient of friction” Definition:
The ratio of the force holding two surfaces in contact to the force required to slide one over the other.
coil
Glossary “coil” Definition:
Term for field coil or ignition coil.
coil –
Glossary “coil -” Definition:
Coil negative (ground) terminal.
