Glossary “cooling system leak test” Definition:
Test performed by installing the tester on the radiator neck, and pressurizing the cooling system. A loss of pressure or coolant indicates that there is a leak.
c
COP
Glossary “COP” Definition:
Coil On Plug
copolymer
Glossary “copolymer” Definition:
Combination of two polymers.
cooling fan controller module
Glossary “cooling fan controller module” Definition:
Electronic unit that will cycle the cooling fan(s) ON and OFF, in response to signals from other engine sensors.
cooling method
Glossary “cooling method” Definition:
Method used to remove excess heat from an engine or system, such as air cooling or liquid cooling.
cooling system
Glossary “cooling system” Definition:
1). An air conditioner. 2). System of parts that circulates coolant through the engine to remove heat. 3). A system to remove heat from a heat-generating mechanism.
Coolant Temperature Switch
Glossary “Coolant Temperature Switch” Definition:
A thermal “ON-OFF” switch that switches the cooling fan on and off at a perscribed temperatures.
coolant thermostat
Glossary “coolant thermostat” Definition:
Component found in the coolant outlet of the engine to help prevent over-cooling conditions, and help to maintain proper engine operating temperature.
cooler
Glossary “cooler” Definition:
Device through which a liquid is circulated and uses air or liquid to cool.
cooler lines
Glossary “cooler lines” Definition:
Tubing through which transmission fluid is pumped to a cooler and returned to the transmission.
cooling coil
Glossary “cooling coil” Definition:
An evaporator, an oil cooler or auxiliary transmission oil cooler.
coolant temperature override switch
Glossary “coolant temperature override switch” Definition:
Temperature-controlled vacuum device that prevents overheating during idle speed, associated with late ignition, by advancing the timing to increase engine-idle speed.
coolant temperature sensor
Glossary “coolant temperature sensor” Definition:
Thermistor that sends a signal to the electronic control unit relative to the coolant temperature in a computerized engine-control system.
coolant recovery system
Glossary “coolant recovery system” Definition:
Cooling system having a vacuum/pressure cap, with a radiator-overflow hose leading into a separate reservoir. This saves coolant during hot operation as the heated coolant expands, and then returns it to the radiator when the system cools. This action maintains the proper coolant level in the radiator.
coolant recovery tank
Glossary “coolant recovery tank” Definition:
Storage container that is used in a coolant-recovery system.
coolant reservoir
Glossary “coolant reservoir” Definition:
Tank or reservoir used for storing excess coolant; connected to the cooling system with a small-diameter overflow hose.
coolant hydrometer
Glossary “coolant hydrometer” Definition:
Tool that compares the weight of pure coolant to water to give an indication of coolant strength.
coolant jacket
Glossary “coolant jacket” Definition:
Hollow passages surrounding the cylinders in the block and the combustion chambers in the cylinder head.
coolant passages
Glossary “coolant passages” Definition:
Coolant passages, called coolant jackets or water jackets, surround each cylinder in the block, and through out the cylinder head(s) to provide a means to carry away unwanted engine heat. Coolant passages may also be found in intake manifolds and even in some throttle body assemblies.
coolant pump
Glossary “coolant pump” Definition:
Term often used for water pump. A centrifugal-type pump used to circulate coolant through the cooling system. May be ellectrically or mechanically driven.
