Glossary “brake pedal reserve” Definition:
Pedal travel distance before the brakes begin to apply.
b
brake power assist
Glossary “brake power assist” Definition:
A device installed in a hydraulic brake system that reduces pedal effort and affords better braking.
brake pull
Glossary “brake pull” Definition:
When a vehicle pulls to one side when the brakes are applied during a stop.
brake moan
Glossary “brake moan” Definition:
A low pich noise that is felt in the floor and/or the steering wheel during light brake application.. Common vehicle speed range between 8 and 40 mph.
brake line
Glossary “brake line” Definition:
Small-diameter, rigid-steel tubing, or flexible, rubber, reinforced hose, used to transmit brake fluid from the master cylinder to the wheel cylinders or calipers when the brakes are applied.
brake lining
Glossary “brake lining” Definition:
A special friction material that will withstand high temperature and pressure, used for lining the brake shoes or pads, either by riveting or bonding.
brake lining pad
Glossary “brake lining pad” Definition:
The friction lining and plate assembly that is forced against the rotor to cause braking action in a disc brake.
brake machining
Glossary “brake machining” Definition:
A procedure of turning a drum or a rotor on special lathe to remove surface imperfections such as scoring, and to eliminate runout and other dimensional problems.
brake mean effective pressure
Glossary “brake mean effective pressure” Definition:
The average effective pressure in an engine’s cylinders at a specific brake horsepower and speed.
brake horsepower (bhp)
Glossary “brake horsepower (bhp)” Definition:
A measurement of horsepower delivered at the engine crankshaft. A pony brake or an engine dynamometer is used to determine brake horsepower.
brake hose
Glossary “brake hose” Definition:
A flexible tubular conduit for the transmission of fluid pressure in the brake system. Designed to allow for suspension travel.
brake light switch
Glossary “brake light switch” Definition:
An electrical switch, operated either mechanically or hydraulically when the brakes are applied, that causes the brake lights to light up.
brake lights
Glossary “brake lights” Definition:
Red lamps at the rear of the vehicle that illuminate when the brakes are applied.
brake feel
Glossary “brake feel” Definition:
A term relating to the driver’s ability to determine the amount of braking force exerted or required during a stop.
brake fluid
Glossary “brake fluid” Definition:
A specially formulated liquid used to transmit brake pedal pressure from the master cylinder to the wheel cylinders. The proper type of fluid must be used in the system that it was designed for.
brake flushing
Glossary “brake flushing” Definition:
The removal of fluid from a brake system, washing out sediment by flushing with denatured alcohol or clean brake fluid, and refilling the system with fresh brake fluid.
brake grab
Glossary “brake grab” Definition:
The sudden increase in the braking of a wheel, often caused by a contaminated lining due to a leaking wheel cylinder, or worn of binding components .
brake hop
Glossary “brake hop” Definition:
Condition that occurs when the swing-arm length of the rear suspension is too short, causing the rear wheels to repeatedly leave the ground during braking.
brake equalizer
Glossary “brake equalizer” Definition:
A device used in the parking-brake systems to equalize the pull of both rear-brake cables during parking brake application..
brake fade
Glossary “brake fade” Definition:
Condition whereby repeated severe application of the brakes, over a short time period, cause an expansion of the brake drum and/or loss of frictional ability, which results in impaired braking efficiency. When every brake shoe are wet, they lose braking ability. Off gassing from the pads can also cause this condition. If the brake fluid is overheated and becomes vaporized, this condition will also occur.
