Glossary “battery cell” Definition:
That part of a battery made from two dissimilar metals and an acid solution. A cell stores chemical energy for use later as electrical energy.

battery (BAT)

Glossary “battery (BAT)” Definition:
A device for storing energy in chemical form so it can be released as electricity. It provides current for the starting system and current to all other electrical devices when the engine is not running.

baseline

Glossary “baseline” Definition:
Repeatable drive cycle used to obtain diagnostic information from a vehicle that failed an I/M test or other driveability concerns. The information will be used to diagnose the vehicle. It can be used to compare information obtained on a verification drive to determine if the vehicle has been successfully been repaired.

base metal

Glossary “base metal” Definition:
1). The largest proportion of metal present in an alloy. 2). A metal that readily oxidizes, or that dissolves to form ions. 3). The metal or alloy that is welded, brazed, soldered, or cut. 4). After welding, that part of the metal that was not melted.

base gauges

Glossary “base gauges” Definition:
First two body gauges hung near the center of the vehicle, usually at torque box areas when measuring for major damage.

base idle

Glossary “base idle” Definition:
1). Manufacturers recommenended idle speed. 2). The RPM that the IAC solenoid attemps to maintain. 3). Idle RPM determined by the throttle lever hardset on the throttle body.
